Mixing is an integral part of any music production and I have a keen interest in the workings of the process. As part of my MSc Project, I am currently running a research process into the perceptual evaluation of mixes, (example interface) to identify what it means to have a “good” mix. Mixing is a specialised process in taking multi-tracks or “stems” and summing them into a final stereo mixdown. In this process, the mix engineers’ aim is to represent the artistic vision of the audio material in it’s best possible form. Besides levelling this often involves the use of technical as well as creative audio signal processing techniques.
I am currently using Pro Tools and a variety of plug-ins to shape a mix into a cohesive and “good” sounding stereo track, that translates well on all playback systems. You can have a listen to my mixes below:
